How to Use the Original Rank Maker
Line up your favorite characters in ranks S to G and make an image of your very own rank chart (tier list). Nothing is difficult. If this is your first time, start with "Getting Started" below.
Getting Started
There are three main ways to make a chart. Pick the one closest to what you want to do. If you are unsure, look at the "Sample" first to see what a finished chart looks like, then make your own with "Bulk Add".
Try a Sample
First, let's see what kind of image you can make, using an example.
- At the very bottom of the editor, under "Try a Sample", press Apply Sample.
- When asked "Reset your edits and load the sample?", press OK. The rank chart switches to an example filled with characters (named "My Job Ranking (Magic)").
- Press Create Rank Chart near the top of the screen. A new page (tab) opens and shows the finished image.
- When you are done, press Close this page on the result page to go back to the editor.
Using the sample erases what you were making. Be careful if you have a rank chart in progress.
Bulk Add, Then Rearrange (Recommended)
This is handy when you already have a theme, such as "I want to rank the FF VII characters". Roughly place everyone first, then fine-tune later.
- In "Rank Settings", press Bulk Add. When asked "Reset your edits and add all characters of the chosen category?", press OK.
- Under "Category", press Select and choose the category you want. Use the tabs at the top to switch between "Series", "Element / Role" and "Job" (for example, "FF VII" under Series).
- Choose "Add to". At first, "Distribute evenly across S–G" is fine. Choose "Put all in Unplaced" to place them in the "Unplaced" area below the chart instead of in ranks.
- If "Use the category as the chart name" is checked, the chart name becomes the category name (for example, FF VII). A name you already entered will be replaced. Uncheck it if you want to keep your name.
- Press OK and the characters are tentatively placed in the ranks.
- Turn on the "Arrange Mode" switch and rearrange them in the order you like. See "How to Rearrange" for details.
- When you are done, press Create Rank Chart to finish.
The first placement only splits the characters evenly by count, so it is just a draft. Don't worry about it; add them first and rearrange afterwards. If you move something by mistake, Undo cancels your last action.
Pick Characters One by One
- Enter a name for your chart in "Rank chart name" (for example, My Fire Physical Tier List). With Input Assist, you can build a name by combining ready-made words.
- Press the + in the rank you want to fill.
- Choose a "Category", then a "Character". For characters with Dress Records, you can also choose a "Dress Record".
- Press Apply to put the character in the rank. Repeat this. The next time you press +, it starts from the category you chose last time.
- When you are done, press Create Rank Chart to finish.
To change a character you added, press that character and choose again. To take it out, press Reset at the top right of that selection screen.
How to Rearrange (Arrange Mode)
Turn on the "Arrange Mode" switch in "Rank Settings" and you can rearrange characters by pressing them. First press the character you want to move once. It gets a lime green frame (this means it is "selected").
(to Unplaced)
While this mode is on, the + buttons are hidden and you cannot add characters. Turn the switch off to add more.
Parts of the Screen
Basic Settings & Image
- Rank chart name
- The name shown at the very top of the finished image. You can also build it from words with Input Assist.
- Show series / Show character names (Image Appearance)
- When switched on, the series mark (for example, "VII" for FF VII) appears at the top left of each character, and the character name appears at the bottom of the image. Both are placed on top of the image, so the rows do not get taller. All name labels are the same size; long names are shown in smaller letters so they fit.
- Show frame (Image Appearance)
- When switched on, each character is shown in a gold frame on a round stand, like in Gigas Coliseum Simulation. The frames line up with no gaps, filling each row exactly. Character names are shown in white bold text with a black outline at the bottom of the frame, like in the game.
- Background
- The background of the finished image. Choose from "Default (Black)", colors such as White or Blue, any color with "Custom color", or a series background image. The small square on the right shows the background you chose.
- Create Rank Chart / Reset All
- "Create Rank Chart" makes the finished image (a name and at least one character are required). "Reset All" keeps the name and takes out all the characters.
Rank Settings
- Arrange Mode
- When on, you can swap, move and remove characters (How to Rearrange).
- Bulk Add
- Adds all characters of the chosen category at once (steps).
- Undo
- Cancels your last rearrange, remove or bulk add. When it is available, the button shows what it will undo.
- Ranks S to G and Reset
- Each rank holds up to 30 characters. "Reset" under the rank name (the ↺ button on smartphones) takes out all characters in that rank.
- Unplaced
- A holding area for characters not yet in a rank. Characters here are not included in the finished image.
- Tidy (fill gaps)
- Fills empty spots by moving characters to the left.
Saving and Sharing the Image
Press Create Rank Chart and the finished image opens in a new page (tab). The editor stays open, so you can keep working on it later.
- Smartphone: Press and hold the image and choose "Save image" or similar. If that doesn't work, tap the image to download it.
- Computer: Right-click the image and choose "Save image as" or similar.
- On the result page you can also switch the series / character name labels and the frame, and choose how many characters (5 to 8) to line up in one row (5 at first), and make the image again.
- Turn on "Transparent background" to save the image without a background (it is white by default).
- Press Share on X (Twitter) to open the X post screen (nothing is posted just by pressing it).
- Press Close this page to close the result page and go back to the editor.
On Android devices, creating the image may take a few seconds.
Troubleshooting
I removed or moved something by mistake
Press Undo to cancel your last action. However, you can no longer undo it once you do something else. "Reset" on a rank and "Reset All" cannot be undone.
What I was making disappeared
Using the browser's "Back" button or reloading the page may erase work in progress. When your chart is ready, press Create Rank Chart early and save the image to be safe.
I can't press "Create Rank Chart"
Either the "Rank chart name" is empty or no characters have been added. Fill in both and the button becomes available.
It says "The following characters appear more than once"
The same character is in two or more places (different Dress Records count as the same character). If that is on purpose, press OK to create the chart as is. To fix it, press Cancel and rearrange the characters listed.
Some characters don't work in the name
Symbols other than "( )" may not be usable. Try removing them. Also, a very long name may not display correctly in the finished image.
What happens to empty spots and ranks with no characters?
In the finished image, empty spots are filled by moving characters to the left. Ranks with no characters are not shown.
Are "Unplaced" characters included in the image?
No. "Unplaced" is just a work area. Move characters into a rank to include them in the image.
There is no "+" for adding characters
The "+" buttons are hidden while "Arrange Mode" is on. Turn the switch off. Also, each rank can hold only up to 30 characters.
